The Colombo National Museum

The Colombo National Museum

The establishment known as the Colombo Museum, initially founded on January 1st, 1877, owes its existence to Sir William Henry Gregory, the British Governor of Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) during that period.
The Royal Asiatic Society (CB) played a crucial role in drawing Sir Gregory's attention to the necessity of establishing a public museum. Despite encountering challenges, the legislative council granted approval within a year of his appointment as Governor in 1872. J.G. Smither, the Architect of the Public Works Department, crafted plans for a new structure inspired by Italian architectural style. Construction concluded in 1876, and the museum officially commenced its operations the following year.
Under the leadership of Dr. P. E. P. Deraniyagala, the museum attained national status and expanded its reach to an international level. In 1942, the Department of National Museums was formally established through Act No. 31, enabling the opening of branch museums in Jaffna, Kandy, and Ratnapura. The number of branch museums has since increased to nine, accompanied by initiatives like a school science program and a mobile museum service.
To enhance the visitor experience, the museum has reorganized its galleries. The ground floor showcases a historical sequence, while the upper galleries follow a thematic arrangement.

National Museum of Natural History

The inception of the National Museum of Natural History, a testament to our natural heritage, dates back to September 23, 1986. Nestled within the premises of the Colombo National Museum, facing Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha in Colombo 07, this unique institution distinguishes itself as the sole representative of Sri Lanka's Natural Heritage amid the array of museums across the country.
Noteworthy for its exclusive focus on Sri Lanka's endemic, rare, and endangered plant and animal specimens, the museum stands out in its commitment to preserving the island's biodiversity. A diverse array of exhibits includes mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, fish, amphibians, various plant species, and geological rocks. One standout display is the Leopard of Punani, captured in Batticaloa District on August 16, 1924, after allegedly causing the demise of 13 individuals.
An intriguing feature of the Natural Science Museum is the showcase of the skull of Megacerus giganteus (elk) at the Geological section. This skull, adorned with colossal horns, belonged to an extinct species of stag and was graciously gifted by Lord Eniskilen in 1950.
